Starting tonight, Monday, Feb. 12, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be implementing overnight ramp closures along I-64 in Norfolk. These closures are part of the construction for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Norfolk Segment.

The closures will include the I-64 east and west on- and off-ramps to Tidewater Drive north and south (exit 277) between Feb. 12-19. The closures will take place from as early as 8 p.m. until as late as 5 a.m., but not all ramps will be closed at the same time. Motorists can expect signed detour routes to be in place to guide them during these closures.

VDOT is urging drivers to make use of their free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions before heading out. These resources provide information about construction, traffic, incidents, congestion, and even access to traffic cameras and weather-related impacts.

It is important to note that the construction work is subject to change depending on weather conditions and scheduling. Therefore, the current schedule for the ramp closures may be modified. To stay informed about construction updates and traffic impacts, drivers can visit the project site at https://64expresslanes.org/under_construction/norfolk.asp and sign up to receive project updates.

The HREL Norfolk Segment is part of the larger HREL network, which spans a continuous 45-mile network of Express Lanes on I-64. This network extends from east of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the I-64/I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill Interchange in Chesapeake. The purpose of the HREL network is to accommodate more motorists in the region, alleviate congestion, and provide travelers with more options for their journeys.

In conclusion, starting tonight, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be implementing overnight ramp closures along I-64 in Norfolk as part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Norfolk Segment construction. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and stay updated on road conditions through VDOT's free traffic tools. These closures are subject to change, and drivers can visit the project site for more information and sign up for updates. The HREL network aims to alleviate congestion and provide more travel options for motorists in the region.
